Minister To Lam works with Under-Secretary-General of UN Counter-Terrorism Office

MPS - General To Lam, Minister of Public Security and a Vietnamese public security delegation on April 22 visited the headquarters of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and held talks with Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office. The working mission was joined by Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations.

Voronkov spoke highly of the cooperation between the UN agencies and the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security in the fight against terrorism over the past years. Accordingly, the two sides have reaped large fruits in personnel training, experience and information sharing, radicalisation prevention projects, aviation security and prevention of funding for terror activities.

Minister Lam emphasized that Vietnam appreciated the important role of the UN in promoting cooperation and uniting international efforts in response to terrorism threats. Additionally, he affirmed that Vietnam wishes to make more contributions to maintaining international peace and security, and run for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term of 2020 - 2021.

* On the same day, Minister To Lam and his delegation visited and worked with the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN. At the meeting, the minister briefed the participants on Vietnam’s security and order situation in early 2019 and the outcomes of the cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the UN over the past years.

He lauded the mission for well implementing the Party and State’s external policy, serving as a bridge to promote ties between the country and the UN and other countries. Minister Lam hoped the mission will urge the UN to work with Vietnamese agencies and the Ministry of Public Security to launch socio-economic as well as security projects, while further assisting Vietnam in training and sharing of experience in addressing non-traditional security challenges.

* Minister To Lam and his entourage also visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington D.C on the afternoon of the same day. He urged the whole staff of the Embassy to implement the commitments and agreements, promote cooperation and high-level visits and exchanges to tighten the Vietnam - U.S  ties, creating favourable conditions for ministries and localities of the two countries to expand cooperation in various fields while ensuring protection and legitimate rights of Vietnamese citizens, popularizing policies of the Party and laws of the State to Vietnamese nationals living in the U.S, and encouraging them to make more contribution to national construction and defence.
