The convict will continue to serve his prison sentence, according to a deal between the two sides.

Nathan Andrew James Jones, born 1982 in Australia was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Vietnamese authority for the charge of “Illegal transportation of narcotics” according to Criminal Judgment No. 502/2017/HSPT issued on September 27, 2017 by the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City, and the sentence was counted from October 22, 2013.

After being imprisoned in Thu Duc Prison, Binh Thuan province to serve his sentence, the inmate submitted an application to the Australian competent authority asking to be transferred to Australia to continue serving the sentence.

On the request of the Australian Attorney General to transfer the person currently serving an official prison sentence in Vietnam, the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam coordinated with the competent local authorities to urgently implement the legal procedures so that the inmate could be transferred as soon as possible to Australia, on the basis of humanity.

Vietnam and Australia have signed an agreement on the transfer of persons sentenced to prison, so the handling of the transfer request was carried out in compliance with the provisions of the agreement.

Previously, Vietnam had successfully transferred prisoners to the Australian side.

On this occasion, the representative delegation of Australia in charge of receiving the prisoner thanked the leadership of the Ministry of Public Security and the competent authorities of Vietnam for their effective support for the transfer.
