Vietnam, Japan exchange documents ratifying agreement on transfer of sentenced persons

MPS - The Vietnamese authorities and the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi held aceremony on July 20 to exchange the documents ratifying the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons between Vietnam and Japan.

The two delegations exchanged documents ratifying the agreement.

The event saw the participation of a Japanese five-member delegation led by Ms. Shinohara Ryoko, Counselor at the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi, and a Vietnamese delegation including four representatives from the Department of Law and International Treaties under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Legal Affairs and Administrative, Judicial Reforms under the Ministry of Public Security, headed by Mr. Nguyen Van Ngu, Deputy Director of the Department of Law and International Treaties.

Reportedly, the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons between the two sides was signed on July 1, 2019 during an official visit to Japan of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

After the two sides exchanged their ratification documents, the Agreement will officially come into effect on August 19, 2020 on the occasion of the 75th founding anniversary of the Vietnamese People's Public Security and the 15th “All People Protecting National Security” Festive Day.

The Agreement will allow citizens of the two countries, who commit crimes and are sentenced to imprisonment in one country, to be transferred and serve their sentences in their home country, helping them quickly reintegrate into the community after completing the sentences.
