Comrade Le Kha Phieu was born on December 27, 1931 in Dong Khe commune, Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province, and resided in Cua Dong ward, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi.
He started his revolutionary career in 1947 and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on June 19, 1949. He was Member of the Party Central Committee of the 7th and 8th tenures, Member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat of the 7th tenure, Member of the Politburo of 7th and 8th tenures, General Secretary of the Party Central Committee from December 1997 to April 2001; and Deputy to the National Assembly of the 9th and 10th tenures.
After a period of illness, despite the wholehearted care by the Party, State, medical group, and his family, he passed away at 2:52 a.m. on August 7, 2020, at his home.
During his more-than-70-year revolutionary career, Mr. Le Kha Phieu made great contributions to the revolution cause of the Party and the nation. He was awarded the “Golden Star” Order, 70-year Party membership insignia, and many other noble Vietnamese and international orders and medals.
His passing is a great loss to the Vietnamese Party, State, and people.
The solemn funeral for the former Party chief started at 8:00 a.m. at the National Funeral Hall, No. 5, Tran Thanh Tong street, Hanoi.
Delegations from the Party Central Committee, the Government, the National Assembly, the State Presidential Office, the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s Central Committee, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of Defense paid last respects to Mr. Le Kha Phieu at his funeral.
After that, Minister To Lam led the delegation of the Public Security Central Party Committee and the Ministry of Public Security to offer flowers and incense to the former Party Secretary General.
