Effective model helps ex-prisoners better reintegrate in society

October, 09 2018
MPS - A program, in which members of the Veterans’ Association support local ex-prisoners reintegration in community, has brought about fruitful outcomes in Vinh Long Commune, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province.

Facts show that, after serving their imprisonment, many former prisoners are lured by bad elements into recommitting crimes, and this leaves various negative impacts on the community, says Lieutenant Colonel Dao Xuan Long, Head of the Criminal Verdict Execution and Judicial Assistance Squad of the Vinh Linh District Police Station.

Vinh Linh police and members of the Veterans Association visit and encourage former prisoners.

Against this backdrop, the district police decided to launch a program on May 2018, calling members of the Veterans’ Association to support former prisoners to reintegrate in the community.

After being put into operation, under the guidance of the police in Vinh Linh district, the People's Committee of Vinh Long commune assigned the local Veterans Association to take care of 6 out of 17 ex-prisoners released in 2017.

After almost 5 months of implementation, ex-prisoners in the locality have made positive changes in their lives and work. Many have become hard-working and decent citizens. Under the patron of local veterans, some former prisoners have been employed by companies and enterprises based in the locality and now have stable incomes while some others have been offered loans to run their own businesses.

This program has helped ex-prisoners overcome the feelings of their past guilt and complex about their status as well as avoid the social prejudice against them.
