At the reception, on behalf of the leadership of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) of Vietnam, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long thanked the Lao Deputy Minister for leading the Lao MPS delegation to attend the 6th Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Ministerial Conference on Anti-Trafficking in Persons held in Vietnam.
Regarding the coordination between the functional forces of the two ministries, the host stated that, based on the 2025 Cooperation Plan and the Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on crime prevention and drug control, the police forces of the two countries have intensified the exchange of information about various types of crimes, particularly transnational crimes and drug-related offenses.
Furthermore, both sides continue to effectively implement the MoU on drug control (signed in 2021 and extended to 2027) and coordinate in investigating joint specialized cases. The two sides maintain regular information exchange on drug crimes affecting each country; coordinate in detecting key points along criminals’ drug transport routes in Bokeo and Luang Namtha provinces; and deploy coordination plans on intensive campaigns against illicit drug trafficking as well as against human trafficking across the Vietnam - Laos border.
In the coming time, to enhance the effectiveness of joint efforts in fighting crime, especially drug trafficking, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long suggested that the police forces of the two nations strengthen and enhance information exchange regarding the crime situation in both countries.
He emphasized the need to boost coordination in establishing and handling joint specialized cases against major drug rings involving both countries. Further, he proposed increasing exchanges and meetings between Vietnamese border communes and their Lao counterparts, sharing experience in drug prevention, and building drug-free border communities.
According to the Vietnamese official, both sides should assign officers to be responsible for exchanging information via the hotlines of specialized department and police departments of provinces along the Vietnam-Laos borderline. This will help leaders of the police units of the two countries give timely and proactive directions to their subordinates to take rapid actions against crimes, particularly drug trafficking, online fraud, human trafficking and other crimes concerning both countries.
Speaking at the meeting, Senior Lieutenant General Khamking Phuilamanivong respectfully thanked Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long for the warm welcome. The Lao Deputy Minister affirmed that the Lao MPS will continue to effectively implement the Cooperation Plan agreed upon by the two Ministries of public Security, and coordinate closely to prevent and resolutely combat all types of crimes, contributing to the peace, stability and shared prosperity of both nations.
