Vietnam, Myanmar promote security cooperation

MPS - General To Lam, on February 24, leading a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security, visited and co-chaired the 3rd Ministerial Meeting at the invitation of Lieutenant General Kyaw Swe, Minister of Home Affairs of the Federal Republic of Myanmar.

At the meeting, the two sides discussed cooperation contents in an open, frank, constructive, trustful, friendly and sincere manner. The two sides agreed that the cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar in general, and between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the Myanmar Ministry of Home Affairs in particular has continuously flourished, greatly contributing to the promotion of the bilateral relationshipin recent years.

The outcomes of cooperation between the two ministries since the second Ministerial Meeting have contributed to ensuring security and safety for diplomatic agencies of one country in the other country, protecting legitimate rights and interests of citizens of one country in the other.

The two sides have also worked closely to successfully ensure security and safety for official visits of top leaders of one country to the other. In addition, the two sides have boosted cooperation in preventing and combating transnational crimes, especially drug-related crimes and terrorism, as well as in building capacity of the two sides’ law enforcement forces in the fight against crimes.

Regarding future cooperation, the two sides agreed to continue available cooperation mechanisms, increase bilateral meetings between experts on the sidelines of high-level meetings with the aim of promoting the practicality and efficiency of bilateral cooperation.

The two ministries should enhance exchange of information about national security of the two countries and the region, coordinate in fighting criminal organizations that make use of ethnic or religious issues to undermine political security and social order and safety in each country.

The two sides will also foster cooperation in language training and share experience in crime prevention and control as well as support each other at multilateral security-defense forums within the framework of ASEAN’s mechanisms.

At the end of the meeting, Minister To Lam and Minister Kyaw Swe signed an agreement on amendments and supplements to the Agreement on crime prevention and suppression between the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of the Federal Republic of Myanmar. The newly-signed deal is considered a long-term legal framework for future cooperation between the two sides./.
