A patient at Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital named Ho Van Trang (9 years old, TayTra, Quang Ngai) was in a critical condition of bone marrow failure and needed immediate platelet transfusion.
On knowing about the case, Captain Nguyen Le Van Tien, Vice Chief of the Staff Work Division of the Quang Ngai Provincial Police Department, also a member of the Quang Ngai Police Youth Blood Donor Club, promptly went to the hospital and volunteered to donate his platelet and saved the patient.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Anh at Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital’s Department of Intensive Care and Toxic Ward revealed: “The patient was in a serious condition and Mr. Tien’s timely platelet donation has saved her life. I want to express my admiration to his noble act.”
Captain Tien has donated blood 16 times, 4 of which have been platelet donation. Unlike blood, platelet cannot be stored and must be transfused directly.
