Vietnam, Japan strengthen cooperation in crime prevention

Chief of the Office of the Criminal Investigation Authority of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and Head of INTERPOL Vietnam Major General Tran Minh Tien led a delegation of the MPS to attend the 2nd Japan–Vietnam Bilateral INTERPOL Conference, held in Tokyo, Japan, from September 30 to October 2, 2025.

At the opening ceremony, Major General Tran Minh Tien and Director General of the International Investigation Bureau and Head of INTERPOL Japan Yasueda Ryo affirmed that, since the 1st Japan–Vietnam Bilateral INTERPOL Conference held in Hanoi in October 2024, the police forces of the two countries have closely cooperated in combating crimes involving the two nations, based on mutual trust and a strong sense of responsibility, and achieved significant outcomes, particularly through the INTERPOL coordination channel.

These results, they emphasized, have made important contributions to ensuring security, maintaining social order and safety for people of the two countries, and further consolidating the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan.

Overview of the conference.

During the conference, the two sides reviewed progress in crime control cooperation through the INTERPOL channel and their mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, particularly the implementation of agreements reached at the first bilateral conference.

The two sides also pointed out several existing challenges, primarily due to differences in the two countries’ legal systems, and discussed appraches to address pending cases.

At the conclusion of the event, both sides reached high consensus on key orientations for future cooperation.

They agreed to continue strengthening the role of the two INTERPOL National Central Bureaus served as coordinators for the police forces of the two countries.

They are also responsible for urging relevant police agencies of each country to promptly verify and respond to requests for criminal information via the INTERPOL channel. as well as for promoting mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and coordination in the investigation and arrest of wanted fugitives.

Within the framework of the working trip, Major General Tran Minh Tien also paid courtesy calls on Director General of the International Cooperation Bureau Kazumi Ogasawara and Director General of the Organized Crime Investigation Bureau Ohama Takeshi, and visited the Chiba Prefectural Police to discuss approaches to promote practical cooperation between the police forces of Vietnam and Japan.
