MPS, UN seek to enhance participation of female police officers in UN peacekeeping operations

MPS - The Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, in coordination with the United Nations (UN) Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), held an international conference titled “Enhancing the participation of female police officers in United Nations peacekeeping operations – Global perspectives and Vietnam’s contributions”, on the afternoon of June 12, in Hanoi.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Le Quoc Hung, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix as well as Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and former Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Thanh co-chaired the conference.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung emphasized that, amid growing instability and conflict across the world, the UN has reaffirmed an important role of women in maintaining international peace and security.

The Deputy Minister stated that the Government of Vietnam in general and the Ministry of Public Security in particular have demonstrated a strong commitment to participating in UN peacekeeping operations. Among the Vietnamese officers having deployed to UN peacekeeping missions, there have been a number of female ones.

The proportion of female police officers deployed by the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam to UN peacekeeping missions currently stands at 33.3%, exceeding the UN’s recommended target, he added.

Speaking at the conference, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix expressed his appreciation for Vietnam’s steadfast support for UN peacekeeping efforts as well as for the country’s commitment to promoting women’s participation, particularly female police officers, in peacekeeping forces.

At the conference, delegates deeply discussed issues regarding the participation of female officers in UN peacekeeping forces. These included the current situation and difficulty of female officers working at UN peacekeeping missions, UN policies and standards for gender equality in peacekeeping operations, and international experiences in deploying female police officers to UN missions.

The forum also reviewed existing policy gaps and proposed specific approaches to enhance the role, participation proportion and quality of female officers, including Vietnamese female police officers as a case-study, in UN peacekeeping operations.

Concluding the conference, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Thanh highly valued in-depth analyses and ideas given by delegates at the meeting regarding the participation of female officers in UN peacekeeping operations, saying that they had contribute to determining successful models and creative strategies to promote gender equality in peacekeeping and law enforcement forces.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Thanh requested that the Ministry of Public Security’s Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations summarize opinions and recommendations given by delegates at the meeting to draft concrete and feasible measures to enhance the participation of women in both domestic public security duties and international peacekeeping missions.
