Having been dedicated to karate since childhood, Nguyen Ngoc Tram has achieved numerous accolades in the kata (performance) category, especially a gold medal at the 19th ASIAD in 2023 in China.
At this year’s tournament, Tram teamed up with three other teammates: Bui Ngoc Nhi, Hoang Thi Thu Uyen, and Nguyen Thi Phuong.
In the final round, the Vietnamese team scored 42.10 points, surpassing the Chinese team (41.70 points) to pocket the first gold medal for Vietnam’s karate delegation at the tournament.
Prior to the final, the team had defeated strong competitors from Malaysia and Chinese Taipei.

That has been the first gold medal in kata for Vietnam at the Asian Karate Championship in the past 10 years. The last victory in this discipline was in 2015, achieved by athletes Nguyen Hoang Ngan, Do Thi Thu Ha and Nguyen Thi Hang.
On the same afternoon, Hoang Thi My Tam also won the gold medal in the women’s individual kumite (sparring) 55kg category, defeating Iran’s Saadati Fateme by 5–0 in the final.
The 22-year-old Vietnamese fighter had previously bested Shrestha Sabina (Nepal) 2–0 in Round 2, Shima Airi (Japan) 7–2 in the quarterfinals, and Wei Yuchun (China) 12–9 in the semifinals.
The 2025 Asian Karate Championship gathered over 300 athletes from 29 countries and territories across the continent.
Later this year, the Vietnamese karate team will continue their international campaign at the 2025 World Karate Championship scheduled for October in Egypt.
