More officials arrested over repatriation flight bribery allegations

MPS - The Security Investigation Agency under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on April 14 arrested Deputy Foreign Minister To Anh Dung and two other accomplices for their alleged involvement in a bribery case when organizing repatriation flights for Vietnamese citizens abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The arrest was the latest development in the investigation into bribery accusations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Consular Department and other authorities. 

Two other arrestees are Pham Trung Kien (born in 1981), an officer at the Ministry of Health's Department of Medical Equipment and Projects, and Vu Anh Tuan (born in 1970), a former officer at the MPS Department of Immigration.

After the Supreme People's Procuracy approved the decision on prosecution and arrest warrants, the police conducted arrests of the suspects, searched their residences and workplaces for evidence and are expanding investigation into the case in accordance with the laws.

On 27 January, the Investigation Security Agency launched an investigation into the abovementioned bribery case and started criminal proceedings against and detained four other officials of the Consular Department for “taking bribes” in line with Article 354 of the Penal Code.

They are Nguyen Thi Huong Lan, Head of the Consular Department; Do Hoang Tung, Deputy Head of the Department; Le Tuan Anh, Chief of the Department’s Office; and Luu Tuan Dung, Deputy Head of the Citizen Protection Desk at the Department.

The investigation agency then prosecuted and arrested Hoang Dieu Mo, born in 1980, General Director of An Binh Commercial, Tourism and Aviation Services Co., Ltd. for “giving bribes” on March 25 after collecting evidence of her wrongdoings.
