At approximately 5:30 p.m. on May 8, the Chieng Ken Communal Police Station under the Lao Cai Provincial Police Department received a report from Mr. Trieu Toan Nhat, head of the security and order team of Khe Tao Village, saying that two foreign nationals seemed to have gotten lost in the Khe Tao area.
Through communications with the foreign tourists, the local authority knew that they were Dylan Francis Whitaker and Katie Jayne from the United Kingdom, who had planned to travel by motorbike from Chau Que commune to Van Ban commune.
Relying on directions from Google Maps, the two tourists had mistakenly entered the inter-village road connecting Khe Tao and Khe Na villages in Chieng Ken commune. Because of the language barrier and unfamiliarity with the mountainous terrain, they had lost their way and sought assistance from local residents.
Immediately after receiving their request for help, Mr. Trieu Toan Nhat provided food and accommodation for the tourists, helping them recover their physical and metal health.
Later, the Chieng Ken Communal Police Station dispatched several officers to guide the tourists through the local difficult road system so that could safely continue their journey.
The timely assistance provided to foreign visitors in difficulty has demonstrated the sense of responsibility of and the effective coordination between the grassroots-level security and order support force and the communal police force. It has also contributed to promoting the friendly and hospitable image of the local people among international visitors.
