Delivering his opening speech, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long highlighted that, over the past 6 years, since the Law on Enforcement of Custody and Temporary Detention came in effect, the law has provided a legal basis for relevant police forces to consistently and effectively implement custody and temporary detention work nationwide, contributing to enhancing the quality of criminal investigation, prosecution, trial and judgement enforcement.
Apart from its advantages, the law has also had several shortcomings and limitations, requiring some necessary amendments and supplements to the law to meet requirements of the current situation.

At the conference, delegates from Central and Central Highlands provincial police departments analyzed the current situation of the custody and temporary detention work in their provinces, evaluated the results of the work since inception of the law, discussed shortcomings and limitations in practices of custody and temporary detention as well as proposed approaches to improve the quality and efficiency of the work in the coming time.
Delegates also discussed amendments and supplements to the Law on Enforcement of Custody and Temporary Detention to better facilitate the work in the current situation.

Addressing the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long underlined that the work of custody and temporary detention plays an important part in crime prevention and control, and greatly contributes to criminal investigation, prosecution, trial and recorrections.
Highlighting limitations and shortcomings of the work due to the incomplete current legal corridor, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long requested that involved police units and agencies should carefully study and propose amendments and supplements to the Law on Enforcement of Custody and Temporary Detention, so as to ensure strictness and humaness of the law as well as protect legitimate rights and policies for persons held in custody or temporary detention and police officers and enlistees in charge of implementing custody and temporary detention.
