The event was also attended by Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of Public Security; Mr. Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam; leaders of relevant ministries, agencies and units, and professors and students from the National University.

According to reports of the National Committee for Prevention and Control of AIDS, Drugs and Prostitution, the situation of drug-related crimes and drug trafficking in Vietnam has basically been controlled but is still involving latent risks and threats due to the complicated regional situation of drug-related crimes and drug trafficking. Particularly, criminal activities of illegal trade and transportation of narcotics became complex along the borderlines between Vietnam and China, Laos and Cambodia.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, said the theme of the Anti-drugs Action Month 2018 “To protect young generations against drug threats” chosen by the Government connotes a wake-up call to the community on the threats of drugs. By holding the meeting at the Hanoi National University, the organizers of the meeting wanted to spread the message to young students – the most-likely-to-be-addicted population, urging them to learn about the dangers of drug abuse.

Mr. Kamal Malhotra highly appreciated the efforts of the Government of Vietnam in drug prevention and fight, and wished that the Government of Viet Nam would continue to coordinate closely with the UNODC agencies in conducting anti-drug operations as well as directing all relevant ministries and local authorities to enhance prevention and fight against drugs while protecting the young generation from drug threats.
